Introduction

We recently sat down with Grant Kirk, CCO of Incorpify, to explore why business in Dubai continues to thrive and why the city remains one of the most attractive global hubs for entrepreneurs and investors alike. A native of South Africa, Grant has lived in Dubai for seventeen years, leading sales and commercial relations for companies across the ecosystem and witnessing firsthand the city’s extraordinary growth.

What initially drew you to Dubai, and what made you decide to build your career here?

I’ve been in the region for close to 17 years now, and it’s remarkable how much Dubai has transformed since I first arrived. I’m originally from South Africa, and when my wife and I had a young child, we wanted to provide a better life for our family. Dubai has given us that opportunity. This country has been very good to us; it’s one of the safest places in the world and perfectly located for travel. That strategic location is part of why Dubai has become such a major hub for business in Dubai and beyond. Another advantage is, of course, the absence of personal income tax, which is very attractive to individuals and businesses alike.

What has it been like living and working as an expat professional in Dubai?

The pace of progress here has been extraordinary. At the moment, new residential projects are launching every nine hours. You see cranes on nearly every street corner, which shows the scale of growth. Dubai is adding roughly a thousand new residents every day. That means the city must constantly expand its infrastructure: housing, schools, services. In fact, 25 new schools are opening this year alone. The growth is continuous, and the city is keeping pace impressively well.

What makes Dubai such an attractive hub for small and medium-sized businesses?

Dubai has been very fortunate geopolitically. During times of unrest elsewhere, such as the Arab Spring, or more recently the war in Ukraine, many people sought out Dubai as a safe haven. During COVID, Dubai’s handling of the pandemic attracted people from all over the world. The Expo also drew millions of visitors who fell in love with the city and chose to relocate.
Another key factor is the ease of setting up a company. Establishing a business in Dubai can be done relatively quickly, safely, and at a reasonable cost. Dubai has also attracted multinationals who use it as a platform not only for the UAE and GCC but the entire MENA region.

What opportunities exist for entrepreneurs? How does the city foster entrepreneurship?

Networking opportunities here are endless. I attend at least two or three events a week, from business councils to trade shows. Entrepreneurs can easily connect with potential partners, clients, and associates.
Our client base reflects that diversity: from one-person startups to multinationals. Every day, I have the privilege of working with people who are establishing, managing, and growing their business in Dubai.

Over the past few years, what trends have you noticed in how and why businesses are setting up in Dubai?

One major change came in June 2021, when it became possible to own a mainland company 100% without a local sponsor. That was a game-changer. The authorities also continue to make the process simpler year after year.
Golden Visas are another big driver. There are now 37 different ways to qualify for a 10-year visa, from property ownership to business establishment to senior executive roles. It’s independent of any company, and extremely popular with those relocating to Dubai.
We’ve also seen a surge in interest from the UK and Europe. Ten years ago, 5–15% of our clients came from those regions. Now, up to half of our inquiries come from there. The appeal is clear: low personal and corporate tax, far less bureaucracy, and a government that actively encourages foreign direct investment.

What are some common misconceptions foreign business owners have about starting in Dubai, and how do you help them navigate the reality?

That’s a great question, because I deal with this on a daily basis. The first thing I tell new clients is that when looking to establish a commercial presence in Dubai, Google is not your friend. There’s a lot of misinformation out there. It’s best to consult a corporate service provider like Incorpify, which can give impartial advice on the best structure for your business in Dubai.
Secondly, what works for one company might not work for another. If your friend set up a trading company, that doesn’t mean it’s the right structure for your IT business. We’re in contact with the authorities daily, so we know the most up-to-date requirements. The rules can change quickly, even week to week.
At Incorpify, we focus on two things: company setup and post-incorporation services. Unlike some firms that offer a bit of everything, we specialize in these areas and provide tailored, impartial advice. Our goal is always to set clients up for long-term success.

Why do you think there is so much misinformation online?

Partly it’s because official websites are not always updated as quickly as the regulations change. And unfortunately, there are also unscrupulous operators who put their own profit ahead of their clients’ best interests. We spend a lot of time educating potential clients, even those who may not work with us right away. Our hope is that when the time comes to set up their business in Dubai, they’ll return to us because they trust the advice we’ve given.

For someone considering expanding or relocating their business to Dubai, what’s your biggest piece of advice?

Do your due diligence. Don’t just pick the first service provider you find online. Speak with a trusted, specialist firm that can give you impartial advice. We’re very clear about staying in our lane. If a client needs services outside of what we offer, we refer them to trusted partners. Integrity is critical. Dubai has huge opportunities, but you need the right guidance to make the most of them.

That concludes our interview. It was such a pleasure speaking with you, Grant. Thank you for sharing your insights.
